Book Review: Enslave by Cathy Yardley


This read was a huge step outside of my usual reading habits. I don’t really read romance novels, so I’m not really up to speed with all the sub-genres and naming conventions, but I think this one falls into the erotica category.
If there are books of this genre that have plots that are actually worthwhile please let me know. Every time I’ve tried, I just get frustrated at how the story is just a very loose vessel to pad out the page count between sex scenes. The plot is flimsy, there’s no character development because the characters are all just caricatures and the sex scenes themselves are just ridiculous.

I don’t feel like it’s very fair of me to speak negatively of this book. It’s a very popular genre that a lot of people enjoy, it’s just not for me.

So much of the actual content was sex scenes, which I don’t enjoy reading anyway, but almost all of these involved coercion of some kind, and that made me quite uncomfortable. I’m not averse to being uncomfortable when reading if it’s for a reason, but the only reason this time was for titillation.

The plot was basic and the characters motivations were simplistic and not always consistent. I don’t know if all erotica books are like this, but I won’t be rushing to try again anytime soon.

The Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan

Good fantasy is my favourite genre. I love the escapism it provides. It can be full of epic wars and battles between gods and men, or just between men and other men. There’s usually magic, which is always cool. So many fantasy stories use the same story – a poor farm boy discovers that his parents aren’t really his parents and that he has some very important, fate-of-the-world type destiny to fulfil. I’m almost half way through the twelve book series and I’m not starting to tire of it at all. The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Getting through the last half of this book was a little like trying to finish that second helping of dessert that you really shouldn’t have had. At first it tastes good and you think “Sure, I could eat this every night, that’d be fine”. But soon it stops tasting so good and you have to start sipping water to help it go down. You’ve eaten too much to stop now, though. There’s no point putting what’s left away, there’s not enough left for a decent snack even. So you plough on through, even though you can’t really fit anymore in and it doesn’t taste as good as it did at the start. It’s a shame, but I kind of ruined it for myself by continuing to eat the Holmes-cake instead of stopping when I got full.   I enjoyed the 4 novels the most. I felt that there was a bit more to sink your teeth into. The Hound of the Baskervilles was probably my most favourite. The short stories were good but started to feel a bit formulaic after a while.
